Holes and free rotation in 2D nesting

Four releases on the afternoon of September 14 make true-shape nesting more accurate in “2D nesting” (then called “Sheet metal 2D”). Nesting is open to everyone, no account needed; DXF export requires a free account with a verified email address.

Holes taken into account

  • Holes in a contour imported with “+ Import DXF” are recognized and shown as cut-outs on the plan.
  • A small part can fit inside the opening of a larger one.
  • The “utilisation rate” counts the actual material, with holes deducted.
  • In the DXF export, holes go on a separate layer named PERCAGE.

Rotation and placement

  • The “Allow rotation” setting offers “None”, “Quarter turns (90°)” or “Free (angled allowed)”.
  • Free rotation is only offered with “CNC / laser / plasma (free contours)”, outside “Rectangular (fast, guillotine)” nesting. Angles that do not help are dropped automatically.
  • Each part is placed by comparing several positions: complementary shapes pair up head-to-tail and the offcut stays more compact.

Guaranteed spacing

  • The spacing entered in “Kerf / spacing (mm)” is guaranteed between two contours, even a very small one: two parts can no longer overlap.
  • Nesting runs in the background: the screen stays usable and the button shows “Nesting…” while it works.
